- The legend of the Veiled Christ in the San Severo Chapel

The Veiled Christ is one of the most famous and evocative sculptures in the world, the fame of this work grows more and more every day and the city of Naples has the enormous fortune of hosting it inside the San Severo Chapel.
The realization was entrusted in 1753 to the Neapolitan sculptor Giuseppe Sanmartino by the so-called “diabolical prince” Raimondo di Sangro. The sculptor was 33 years old at the time and in just 3 months he completed this unrivaled masterpiece.
The Veiled Christ is a work with a mystical charm. Its powerful and wonderful aspect, and at the same time realistic and delicate, still suggests that it could not have been made only with simple marble.
Over time, a legend was created which stated that Raimondo di Sangro, who was also a very famous alchemist and scientist, had taught the sculptor a special technique. It is said, in fact, that after the conception of the figure of Christ carved in marble, the artist would have placed a real veil of fabric on it and – with a mystical chemical formula – would have obtained the calcification of the fabric in marble crystals.
For anyone who visits our city it is a stop not to be missed, just think that even the sculptor Antonio Canova, during his stay in Naples not only tried to buy it, but it is said that he would have given 10 years of life just to be the author. of the work.
